"Semiotics of the Kitchen"

"Semiotics of the Kitchen" adopts the form of a parodic cooking demonstration in which, Rosler states, „An anti-Julia Child replaces the domesticated „meaning“ of tools with a lexicon of rage and frustration“. In this performance-based work, a static camera is focused on a woman in a kitchen. On a counter before her are a variety of utensils, each of which she picks up, names and proceeds to demonstrate, but with gestures that depart from the normal uses of the tool. In an ironic grammatology of sound and gesture, the woman and her implements enter and transgress the familiar system of everyday kitchen meanings - the securely understood signs of domestic industry and food production erupt into anger and violence. In this alphabet of kitchen implements, states Rosler, „when the woman speaks, she names her own oppression“.

In ihren Videos, Fotografien, Performances und in ihrer Tätigkeit als Autorin konstruiert Martha Rosler einschneidende soziale und politische Analysen von Mythen und Realitäten patriarchaler Kulturen ab. Ihre Videoarbeiten enthüllen, wie sozialökonomische Realitäten und politische Ideologien das Alltagsleben beherrschen. Sie legt u.a. die Objektivierung von Frauen (Vital Statistics of a Citizen, Simply Obtained, 1977); Magersucht und Hungern (Losing: A Conversation With The Parents, 1977) sowie Leihmutterschaft (Born to be Sold, 1988) dar. Rosler schloss als B.A am Brooklyn College und als M.F.A. an der University of California, San Diego ab. Sie erhielt verschiedene Stipendien. Künstleraufenthalte u.a. an der University of Colorado, Boulder; the School of the Art Institute of Chicago; Satellite Video Exchange Society, Vancouver. Derzeit hat sie eine Professur an der Rutgers University. Ihre Arbeiten sind u.a. im Long Beach Museum of Art, Kalifornien; Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston; Museum of Modern Art, New York dauerhaft ausgestellt. Außerdem werden in verschiedenen weiteren Institutionen Ausstellungen ihrer Werke gezeigt. Rosler lebt in New York.
